Police Say Christmas Gaming Drove Woman to Attack Children with ...

Police Say Christmas Gaming Drove Woman to Attack Children with Butcher Knife Allegedly enraged over her five-year-old son's playing of a video game he received as a Christmas gift, Jutrina Tillman of Phoenix, Arizona, dragged the young boy into his bedroom and began to strangle him before threatening to kill him and his 13-year-old sister with a butcher knife.

Around 10PM on Christmas night Phoenix police received a 911 call from Tillman's hysterical daughter, claiming the woman was attempting to kill her and her younger brother over a video game.

Tillman, who had reportedly been drinking throughout the day, flew into a rage over her five-year-old son's playing of a new game he received as a holiday gift earlier that day. According to the daughter, the mother grabbed her son by the arm and dragged him into his bedroom. Hearing screaming, the daughter entered the room to find her mother strangling her little brother.

Tillman stopped attacking the boy, leaving the room only to return with a six to eight inch butcher knife, pointing it at the girl's chest and brandishing it towards the boy, threatening to kill them both. When the daughter broke free and ran outside dialing 911, the mother grabbed the boy and bore him back inside the house, choking him with the crook of her arm.

Fortunately police arrived before either child was seriously hurt. Upon their arrival Tillman attempted to flee to a neighbor's house but was taken into custody. The children are safe with relatives today, while Tillman herself is police custody, facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

So, how was your Christmas?

Holiday Short Squeeze & Oil Trade Idea

Traders Blog | Saturday 24 December 2011

Typically, the week before Christmas, stocks and commodities drift higher due to the lack of participants.? Light volume favours higher prices, which is why stocks want to rise going into the holiday season.

The big money players, like hedge fund managers, are finished for the year.? They?re sitting on the sidelines enjoying the holiday season while waiting for their year-end bonus checks.

Let?s take a quick look at how the week finished?

Friday was an interesting session as stocks and oil reached some key resistance levels.? Below are my thoughts, charts, and a possible trade idea for next week.

Gold & Silver Thoughts:

Looking at the long term charts of gold and silver, I feel they could head much lower in the first quarter of 2012.? The inverse relationship between the dollar index and gold makes me think this is a high probability scenario.

The weekly dollar index chart remains strong at this point and could start another very strong rally any day. Once the dollar starts heading higher, expect precious metals to move down along with equities.

SP500, Dollar and Volatility Index

Below are three charts stacked on top of each other.? They are marked with my analysis and thoughts for next week.? Personally, I don?t feel shorting stocks is a safe play.? The last week of the year, we can see the volatility index (VIX), and the dollar, rise without putting pressure on stocks.? So be aware of that.

?

?

TRADE?IDEA ? View Chart:

Crude oil looks like a great low risk opportunity (a real ?Christmas? present!) from Mr. Market. SCO would be the ETF for US based traders.? HOD, which is listed on the TSX, is good for Canadians.? I favour this setup because I don?t feel that oil will be as affected from the holiday bulge as will American equities.

Pre-Holiday Trading Conclusion:

I was planning on avoiding the market Friday, but the charts were calling my name?? The session ended with what looked to be a short squeeze. The remaining short positions didn?t get their expected drop in price.? Consequently, when the traders all started to cover their shorts (buy) just before the close, it caused a strong surge higher.

I do not recommend shorting stocks next week because of the light volume.? However, oil looks good to me.

Just thought I would share my end of the week thoughts, and wish you a Merry Christmas!

Cheers!

Chris Vermeulen

HTC Super Tool Unlocks and Roots Many Popular HTC Devices [Android Rooting]

HTC Super Tool Unlocks and Roots Many Popular HTC DevicesOwners of popular HTC phones like an Evo, myTouch, G2, and others can now root their phone in just a few simple steps with the HTC Super Tool for Windows.

The tool uses the popular zergRush exploit, which works on a number of HTC phones and can be found in other tools like previously mentioned Revolutionary. With just a few clicks, you can root your phone, get S-OFF, unlock the bootloader, get rid of Sense, and more. You can even unroot by re-running the program. Right now, the device has been tested on the Evo Design 4G, Evo 4G, Evo 3D, Evo Shift, T-Mobile G2, myTouch 3G and 4G, Inspire, Sensation, Incredible, Wildfire S, and Amaze, though it should work on a number more. If you test it with your phone and find that it works, let the developer know over at XDA, and email me at whitson+rootingguide@lifehacker.com so I can add it to the list. We'll be adding this method to our always up-to-date rooting guide as well very soon. Hit the link to check it out.

Stocks open lower as European worries persist (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks opened slightly lower Wednesday as worries over the European debt crisis persist, overshadowing a strong auction of Italian government debt.

The European Central Bank said the continent's banks parked a record $590.72 billion overnight at the bank, reflecting distrust in the European banking system.

Italy held two successful bond auctions, paying much lower borrowing rates than it did in other auctions last month. The strong demand from investors raised hopes that Italy would be able to avoid sinking into a financial crisis, as smaller countries like Greece and Portugal have.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 56 points at 12,235 as of 10 a.m. Eastern. Materials and energy companies were leading the declines. Alcoa Inc. fell 1.4 percent. Only one of the 30 stocks in the Dow average rose, AT&T Inc.

Trading was very quiet in a holiday-shortened week. Markets were closed Monday in observance of Christmas. The Dow closed 2 points lower Tuesday.

The S&P 500 was down 6 points at 1,258. The Nasdaq composite was down 17 points at 2,608.

The Bank of Italy raised $11.8 billion in two bond auctions, reflecting investor approval of the country's recently passed austerity measures. The yield on Italy's six-month bill offering was half the interest rate the country paid in a similar auction last month. The yield on the country's 10-year bond remained dangerously high, however, at 6.93 percent. It had risen to 7 percent Tuesday, a level that is considered unsustainable.

Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to save under the euro zone's current bailout funds. Investors have grown fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around $2.5 trillion.

Investors particularly feared that a global contagion could spread if any of the European countries defaulted on their debt. European banks held large quantities of debt from their countries.

The banks' distrust of each other was reflected in the record amounts of money they have parked with the European Central Bank. Instead of making money by lending to each another, banks have chosen to hold money at low interest rates at the ECB.

The worries were reflected in U.S. bank stocks. Bank of America Corp. fell 2 percent, while Regions Financial Corp. fell 3 percent.

General: Improve US coordination with Pakistan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Military officials have not ruled out disciplinary action as a result of the cross-border attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, but no one has been punished to date, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

An investigation into the late-November incident concluded that a persistent lack of trust between the U.S. and Pakistan, and a series of communications and coordination errors on both sides, led to the attacks.

Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said military leaders will use the final report on the investigation to determine if anyone should be punished. Those decisions, he said, would be made by officers in the chain of command, depending on whether they found that mistakes were made by U.S. or NATO personnel.

As a result of the probe, the top U.S. general for the Middle East issued a list of improvements Monday he said must be made to keep similar mistakes from happening.

U.S. Marine Gen. James N. Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, ordered commanders in Afghanistan to improve coordination of operations along the Afghan-Pakistan border with Pakistani military, and ensure that all border stations are listed correctly on maps.

Mattis also ordered commanders to confirm border post locations before beginning operations along the border. And he ordered commanders to share military practices and procedures with the Pakistanis so they can better understand U.S. operations.

It's not certain the new orders will solve the problems, because Pakistan refused to participate in the investigation. It still is unclear why Pakistani troops initially fired on U.S. soldiers who had landed by helicopter near a village close to the border as part of a mission to go after insurgents.

The U.S. investigation found that the Pakistani forces fired first and that U.S. troops acted in self-defense. But U.S. efforts to determine if there were Pakistani forces in the area were foiled by bad maps, poor coordination and Islamabad's failure to provide the locations of its border posts.

The investigation, headed by Brig. Gen. Stephen Clark, an Air Force special operations officer, found that U.S. forces relying on erroneous maps and poor communications, determined that there were no Pakistani forces or border posts in the area. So they concluded that they were being fired on by insurgents.

U.S. forces also believed that since they had landed in distinctive, noisy Chinook helicopters and fired off warning flares, any friendly forces would have realized that they were shooting at American or NATO troops.

The report also revealed that a U.S. C-130 gunship briefly flew about two miles into Pakistan airspace during the assault.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas has rejected the U.S. report and insisted that Pakistani forces retaliated only after coalition helicopters "started engagement." And he denied that Pakistan failed to notify NATO of the location of the two border posts that were attacked.

Pakistani officials have said the report is unlikely to repair the severely damaged relationship between the two countries.

In response to the incident, Pakistan shut down key border supply routes for the Afghanistan war and threw the U.S. out of its Shamsi air base in southwestern Baluchistan province. The base was used to maintain drones deployed in strikes against insurgents hiding in safe havens in Pakistan's lawless border region.

Pakistan has closed the border on at least two other occasions after disputes with the U.S. but reopened the supply routes after less than two weeks. American officials have acknowledged the closures are likely to last longer this time.

Mexico drug cartel Zetas have their own radio system

MEXICO CITY -- When convoys of soldiers or federal police move through the scrubland of northern Mexico, the Zetas drug cartel knows they are coming.

The alert goes out from a taxi driver or a street vendor, equipped with a high-end handheld radio and paid to work as a lookout known as a "halcon," or hawk.

The radio signal travels deep into the arid countryside, hours by foot from the nearest road. There, the 8-foot-tall (2-meter-tall) dark-green branches of the rockrose bush conceal a radio tower painted to match. A cable buried in the dirt draws power from a solar panel. A signal-boosting repeater relays the message along a network of powerful antennas and other repeaters that stretch hundreds of miles (kilometers) across Mexico, a shadow communications system allowing the cartel to coordinate drug deliveries, kidnapping, extortion and other crimes with the immediacy and precision of a modern military or law-enforcement agency.

The Mexican army and marines have begun attacking the system, seizing hundreds of pieces of communications equipment in at least three operations since September that offer a firsthand look at a surprisingly far-ranging and sophisticated infrastructure.

Current and former U.S. law-enforcement officials say the equipment, ranging from professional-grade towers to handheld radios, was part of a single network that until recently extended from the U.S. border down eastern Mexico's Gulf coast and into Guatemala.

The network allowed Zetas operatives to conduct encrypted conversations without depending on the official cellphone network, which is relatively easy for authorities to tap into, and in many cases does not reach deep into the Mexican countryside.

"They're doing what any sensible military unit would do," said Robert Killebrew, a retired U.S. Army colonel who has studied the Mexican drug cartels for the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank. "They're branching out into as many forms of communications as possible."

The Mexican army said on Dec. 4 that it had seized a total of at least 167 antennas, 155 repeaters, 166 power sources, 71 pieces of computer equipment and 1,446 radios. The equipment has been taken down in several cities in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz and the northern states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, San Luis Potosi and Tamaulipas.

Working Hollywood: Animal trainer Bettina Browne

Bettina Browne trained tigers for Fox's new family film "We Bought a Zoo," but of all the felines she's recently wrangled for movies, she considers the toughest customers to be the ordinary house cats she was tasked with taming for director David Fincher's dark, biting thriller, Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

"Tigers and lions are a little bit more dog-like in the sense that they still do like to please you," said Browne, who worked for Birds and Animals Unlimited on the two films. "House cats, if they feel like it, they will. But especially when you're working with them, they're like, 'Nah, I don't really want to do that. It's work.'"

Cattitudes haven't hampered Browne's lifelong love of animals, though. As an undergraduate at USC, she studied anthropology with an emphasis on primates and considered moving to South Africa to be a safari guide. But instead, she finished her degree and tried such endeavors as gallery work and fashion styling before answering the call of the wild. "I met my husband, Eric Weld, and he had just gotten into exotic animal training," she said. "I thought, 'Ah, that's what I want to do, too.'"

On her first job, she trained 7-month-old lion cubs for a Whiskas commercial. But the first time she ever worked with a full-grown male lion ? a 550-pound creature named Felix ? was on 2007's "Prey," which she considers the biggest step in her career.

"It was an unfortunate situation actually because my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, and another trainer on that movie, they got shot," she said. "The African farm they were staying at, these people came and robbed their bungalow and shot them, one in the shoulder and then my husband in his hand."

Browne stepped in to finish the movie with Felix and discovered that he responded much differently to a female rather than a male trainer. "They're a little more lovey, a little more accepting," she said.

Since then, Browne has trained animals of all sizes for films including "Step Brothers," "Angels & Demons" and "Zookeeper," but she saves the lion's share of her love for the big cats.

"Maybe it was from watching 'Born Free' when I was younger, but the big cats are really my first passion," she said. "I always have to step back while I'm working and just be amazed at the fact that I'm on leash, or I'm working a tiger or a lion, and I'm just loving the relationship that I can have with them."

Stars with stripes: Based on Benjamin Mee's memoir, director Cameron Crowe's "We Bought a Zoo" centers on a widowed journalist (Matt Damon) who moves his two children into a struggling California zoo. While Crowe focused on coaxing the best performances from the human actors, Browne turned her attention to the tigers.

"We had Katie, who played the old tiger, Spar," said Browne. "It was nothing too difficult, because it's a zoo. We did some interior shots where she would lie there, and Matt Damon would talk to her. He was very good with the tigers. We also had Kismet and Schicka, the younger tigers, who I actually hand-raised. We did have to teach them to jump up into where their indoor facility was on the movie set. They like to show off their jumping abilities. They all like to work for meat."

On a long leash: "One of the biggest and most important things that we taught the cats for 'We Bought a Zoo' was working on cables," said Browne. "The cables are black, plastic-coated steel aircraft cables, and they would attach to their collars. We had 10- and 20-foot cables, depending on the shot. Because we could not be close to them, they had to be secured so that they would be able to work together and around the actors safely."

Stop and go: According to Browne, house cats tend to work in teams of three, but in the case of the Sweden-set "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," one cat stole the show. "His name is Scotty, who is just a domestic short-haired brown tabby," she said. "He did a very good job playing all roles. He had to come in through the window, and then jump into the cottage and run across the floor into the kitchen."

Just act natural: "On 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' I definitely learned to work a cat without food, because director David Fincher likes a lot of natural action, and natural action you can't do with food," Browne said. "Scotty's very toy- and movement-driven. So I learned to work him with my hand and just little subtle movements. I had never worked with a cat in that way before, so that was fun and new. Whenever you go on set, you never know what you're getting into. You just have to have that personality where you can go with the flow."

Japan arrests two Chinese skippers for illegal fishing

Japan?s coast guard yesterday said it has arrested two Chinese boat skippers in separate cases of suspected illegal fishing in Japanese waters.

Officials said a 39-year-old skipper was arrested on Tuesday for alleged coral poaching off the Goto Islands near Kyushu and a second skipper was arrested on Wednesday near the Ogasawara islands, 1,000km south of Tokyo.

They said both allegedly ignored calls to stop for inspection, prompting a chase.

If convicted, the skippers could face up to six months in jail or a fine of up to ?300,000 (US$3,840).

The arrests are a possible fresh test for sometimes fraught maritime relations, just days after a South Korean officer was stabbed to death at sea.

On Tuesday, a coast guard vessel pursued the fisherman?s 130 tonne boat for more than six hours after it was spotted lowering ropes into the water about 4km off the Goto Islands.

Japanese officers found some coral and tools to collect the organisms on the boat, but they have yet to determine whether they were taken from Japanese territorial waters, the coast guard said.

The boat?s captain, Zhong Jinyin (???), 39, was taken to the coast guard?s Nagasaki office while investigators inspected the boat, which had 10 other crew on board, a spokesman said.

The coast guard approached the boat at about 10:30pm on Monday, prompting the Chinese to flee, despite repeated Japanese orders to stop.

In total, five coast guard vessels took turns to chase the Chinese vessel until about 5 am, when the boat was stopped for an onboard inspection.

?We used a speed boat to bring the boat?s captain to [the coast guard?s office in] Nagasaki. The on-site investigation of the vessel is continuing, before we move the ship and the rest of the crew,? a spokesman said. ?We are not experiencing any disobedient behavior from the captain.?

The latest arrest comes as Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is scheduled to visit Beijing for two days, starting on Sunday.

Got an iPhone 4S for Christmas? Have Some Fun With Siri [PICS]

Ever since we got our iPhone 4S, we?ve been having a lot of fun with its built-in digital assistant, Siri. An excellent repository to all kinds of Siri tricks has been LifeWithSiri.com. Now, there?s Life with Siri, an ebook that compiles the funniest Siri responses from the site, giving you plenty of fodder to show off your new iPhone 4S to your envious Christmas guests.

Jodi Dery, the author of the book, gave us permission to show you 10 of the funniest Siri dialogues, giving you a sneak preview of the Life with Siri ebook. We took a look at a copy of the book, and it?s not only a humorous source of Siri sarcasm and saucy rejoinders, but it?s full of useful info about what Siri can do and how you can use it.

?Life with Siri? is an appropriate title for this book, because now that we?ve lived with it for a couple of months, we?re started to realize what this software can do. Although we use it mostly to set our alarms, it?s especially good in a pinch, when we?re in a hurry and don?t even have time to type anything.

For instance, in addition to having a lot of fun with Siri, texting is completely hands-free, and we even taught it how to post on Twitter for us. Heck, we hear even Santa uses Siri.

But if you just received an iPhone 4S for Christmas, it?s hard to tell precisely what Siri can and cannot do. The gallery below will show you some of the clever things you can do with Siri, but the book will show you even more. The software has tremendous potential, which is well-demonstrated in this book.

This book gives you a lot of info for your $1.99, the price of the electronic version of Life with Siri, now available on Amazon and elsewhere. You can also get it as a print edition for $4.99, to be published on Jan. 2.
