The Scene to be Green - Property Report

It was only a matter of time before Singapore caught the attention of the hosts of 100 % Design 2012. This year was the inaugural event in Singapore, and after personally attending the event, something tells

me it won?t be the last.

Being held right next door to South East Asia?s leading exhibition for green building ? BEX Asia 2012, provided a perfect collaboration of creativity, technology and forward thinking with 100% Design 2012.?BEX Asia 2012 covered everything from green infrastructure and energy saving capabilities to space saving. Companies flew in from all around the world to demonstrate their work and reveal the latest?technology. Terence Tan, director of Johnson Controls, who is paving the way with its forward thinking green initiatives, explained: ?As humans, we?re getting smarter so that should reflect in our technology,? he told me. Veera, managing director at Greenology PTE LTD, agreed and was proud to display examples of his work. Metres of green and colourful strips decorate his stand ? a display of what he has coined GVG (Greenology Vertical Greenery). The vertical greenery that you see in terminals 1 through to 3 at Changi Airport is Veera?s handiwork. Perfect for space saving in countries such as Singapore where space is of the essence.

But it was not just BEX Asia 2012 that is concerned with space saving; next-door at 100% Design 2012, interior designers, furniture designers and high-end furnishings companies from around the globe also flew in to showcase their talents. The furniture design at Spaceman, for example, offered an interesting take on space saving ? even offering a sofa bed/bunk bed among its many solutions. There were many more fancy installations to catch my eye, such as Design Intervention i.d?s creative inventions and the thick, luscious carpets at Four-O-Nine?s stand that combine design and luxury seamlessly. It?s no wonder that joint founders and creative directors Lukasz B. Kos and Andrei Zerebecky are anticipating the future ? given the positive response they had at the show. ?We have had some big hotel brands contact us on the back of this show,? said Zerebecky. ?And we could even have an order already.?

Singapore, with its strategic location and plethora of luxury hotels is increasingly becoming a hub for MICE events and although this was 100% Design?s first year in the Lion State, it did not fail to impress. Here in Singapore, it?s not just the scene to be seen, it?s the scene to be green.

Editor's Note | November 2012 - Articles | Travel + Leisure

?It?s the jump cuts between unlike places that keep the action interesting? were the words from T+L contributing editor Adam Sachs (?When the Right Trip Goes Wrong?) that kept echoing through my mind as I tried to get my enthusiasm up for a jump cut of my own last Friday morning. Having arrived home in New York at 8 p.m. the previous evening, I was unpacking my suitcase from a week in Central Europe and repacking it for three nights in London, a challenging maneuver that ultimately led me to the chair in my central London hotel room where I am now seated. This month, in an instance of magazine articles mirroring life, our cover feature, ?101 Places Every Traveler Should Know,? catapults from the first-century-B.C. monument of Petra, in Jordan, to Louis XIV?s gardens in Versailles, and from a cruise on the Amazon to a drop-by at New Orleans?s Preservation Hall. Endlessly debated in our offices, this travel life list is the result of a prodigious polling effort?beginning in-house with the magazine?s editors and fanning out to our global network of correspondents, contributors, and experts, and expanding beyond to some noted personalities with a lot to say. One thing is certain: the list, in all its glorious eccentricity, will provoke some strong reactions from you, our readers.

Of course, the places we highlight in every issue of T+L are ones we think you should know. This month they range from the Caribbean to Paris, and from Panama to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Our cruise editor, Jane Wooldridge, offers her personal account of the attractions of vacations at sea, and our annual Air Travel Report will help you get past the ever-changing hurdles?including security?faster.

No matter the jump cuts along the way, I am a strong advocate for traveling slowly whenever you can. This morning I took advantage of a gap in my meetings schedule and went for a walk along the Thames, heading south toward Westminster Bridge then crossing over and returning on Waterloo Bridge, where a sweet Saudi couple pushing a baby carriage asked me to take a picture of them against a backdrop of the London Eye and Big Ben. As I made my way through Victoria Embankment Gardens toward my hotel, I was thinking not about work, but about flowers, and how much later they bloom in London than in my Connecticut garden. Between sometimes jarringly fast transitions, travel offers delectable opportunities to take a deep breath and bask in where you are.

Egypt standoff between president, prosecutor ends

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's new president backed down Saturday from his decision to remove the country's top prosecutor, keeping him in his post and sidestepping a potential clash with the country's powerful judiciary.

The two-day standoff between President Mohammed Morsi and Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud escalated with a backlash from a powerful group of judges who said Morsi's move had infringed upon their authority.

The standoff, which both sides later described as a "misunderstanding," exposed the enduring strength of an establishment packed with holdovers from the days of former President Hosni Mubarak, and underlined Morsi's limitations in challenging long-standing institutions.

Some of those who had urged the dismissal of Mahmoud, in the post since Mubarak times, said Morsi's move was clumsily handled and appeared as political score-settling between Islamists and former regime officials rather than the sweeping reform so many are calling for in Egypt.

Though Morsi's decision had considerable public support, it appeared similar to his move to restore the Islamist-dominated parliament to session despite a decree by the Supreme Constitutional Court, which dissolved it over election law violations. He backed down after an uproar over ignoring court rulings.

Morsi had ordered Mahmoud to step down Thursday in an apparent bid to appease public anger over the acquittals of former regime officials a day earlier accused of orchestrating violence against protesters last year.

Egyptian law protects the prosecutor general from being fired by the president. To overcome the constraints, Morsi asked Mahmoud to become ambassador to the Vatican.

But Mahmoud refused to be re-appointed and quickly defied Morsi's decision. Backed by a powerful club of judges which said the move was an infringement on the judiciary, he went to his office on Saturday in defiance, accompanied by a tight security escort and hundreds of supporters.

Hours later, Mahmoud and members of the country's Supreme Judicial Council met with Morsi's advisers.

"I remain in my post. We resolved the problem amicably," Mahmoud told The Associated Press after the meeting. "We told him I wanted to stay and that there was a misunderstanding. He didn't object."

Morsi's Vice President, Mahmoud Mekki, said initially the president wanted to protect the prosecutor general from public pressure and protests, and then cancelled the transfer to avoid "sedition."

"Some politicians are trying to push the judiciary into the political battlefield," Mekki said. "We were surprised by those voices raised to defend the independence of the judiciary. Now those accused of infringing on the judiciary's independence are the ones who had long defended it."

He said the decision was initially made to avoid popular anger following the Wednesday acquittal of Mubarak loyalists over their alleged role in a turning point of the 2011 uprising, known as the "Battle of the Camel," when camels ridden by Mubarak supporters charged into an opposition crowd.

After the meeting with Morsi, hundreds of judges came out to congratulate Mahmoud at his office.

The head of the powerful Judges Club, Ahmed el-Zind, who had rallied behind Mahmoud, said a "face saving" statement will be issued from both sides.

"What we care about is that we assert that the judiciary is a red line which we will not allow anyone to cross," he told attorneys and judges.

The move to remove the prosecutor general presented Morsi with a dilemma: if he moved too aggressively against Mahmoud, it would have fed into criticisms that he is exceeding the powers of his office. If he had moved too slowly, it would have fueled accusations that he is failing to address the goals of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mubarak.

Many say an entire overhaul of the judiciary, not just removal of the prosecutor general, is needed to effect change in justice and to gain widespread support.

Ahmed Ragheb, a human rights lawyer who had long backed the decision to sack Mahmoud, said Morsi's move backfired and "looked like a fight between the Brotherhood and the prosecutor general."

Ragheb criticized Morsi for not taking action on a package of proposals to overhaul the judiciary that would address issues of justice and retribution for the families of those killed in last year's uprising, and included replacing the prosecutor general.

"It was badly managed," Ragheb said. "Mahmoud has now been given an undeserved status as a hero of judicial independence."

Many Egyptian activists accuse Mahmoud of having failed, either intentionally or due to incompetence, to present a strong case against those accused of abuses during the revolution.

Meanwhile, Morsi is facing unprecedented public discontent.

The judicial standoff was the backdrop to rival rallies Friday in Cairo's central Tahrir square that escalated into street fighting between Morsi's supporters and his critics, the first such confrontation since he came to office in late June.

Pro-Morsi protesters, rallying to urge the removal of Mahmoud, clashed with a planned anti-Morsi demonstration denouncing the lack of progress on economic issues and a hotly contested constitution stuck in a drafting process.

Morsi's supporters say the constitutional drafting panel was set up by an elected parliament and broadly represents Egypt's political factions. Critics say the process is dominated by a majority made up of Islamists, such as the Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsi hails and more radical groups, when it should be determined by consensus.

Liberals and secularists also fear that Morsi's foray into the affairs of the judiciary show he is amassing too much power, especially as he retains legislative authority in the absence of a parliament, which was dissolved just before his electoral victory.

Over 100 protesters were injured in the clashes, while police were nowhere in sight. Morsi's spokesman Yasser Ali said Saturday that the presidency was "displeased" with the violence, adding that "dialogue" should remain the basis for resolving disagreements.

Islamist expert Ammar Ali Hassan said Morsi's decision to back down from a showdown with the judiciary may have been partly influenced by the clashes, which he calls a sign of growing public displeasure.

"He didn't have other options but to back down. The alternative would have been an open conflict with the judiciary, a round I imagine he can't go through, particularly with the visible discontent from the various political groups with the emerging new authority," Hassan said.

Shot fired at Obama campaign office in Denver

DENVER (AP) ? Denver police are reviewing video footage from city surveillance cameras after a shot was fired through the window of President Barack Obama's campaign office.

Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says cameras are in the area of the campaign office on West Ninth Avenue near Acoma Street near Denver's downtown, and investigators are poring over the tapes for any leads. She did not release any other information, citing an "active, ongoing investigation."

Lopez says people were inside the office when the shooting happened Friday afternoon, but no one was injured. A large panel of glass was left shattered at the office.

Lopez says she isn't aware of any previous threats against the campaign office.

The Secret Service referred questions about the shooting to Denver police, and an Obama campaign spokeswoman declined to comment.

New US visa rush: Build charter school, get green card

It's been a turbulent period for charter schools in the United States, with financial analysts raising concerns about their stability and regulators in several states shutting down schools for poor performance.

    7. Chicago public schools chief out in wake of teachers strike

The volatility has made it tough for startup schools to get financing.

But an unlikely source of new capital has emerged to fill the gap: foreign investors.

Wealthy individuals from as far away as China, Nigeria, Russia and Australia are spending tens of millions of dollars to build classrooms, libraries, basketball courts and science labs for American charter schools.

In New York, foreign funds paid for the Health Sciences Charter School in Buffalo to renovate a 19th-century orphanage into modern classrooms and computer labs. In Arizona, overseas investment is expected to finance a sixth campus for the booming chain of American Leadership Academy charter schools.

And in Florida, state business development officials say foreign investment in charter schools is poised to triple next year, to $90 million.

The reason? Under a federal program created in 1990 and known as EB-5, wealthy foreigners can in effect buy U.S. immigration visas for themselves and their families by investing at least $500,000 in certain development projects. In the past two decades, much of the investment has gone into commercial real-estate projects, like luxury hotels, ski resorts and even gas stations.

Lately, however, enterprising brokers have seen a golden opportunity to match cash-starved charter schools with cash-flush foreigners in investment deals that benefit both.

"The demand is massive - on the school side," said Greg Wing, an investment advisor. "On the investor side, it's massive, too."

Two years ago, Wing set up a venture called the Education Fund of America specifically to connect international investors with charter schools. He is currently arranging EB-5 funding for 11 schools across North Carolina, Utah and Arizona and says he has four more deals in the works.

And that's just the start, Wing says: "It's going to be explosive."

Credit crunch
The charter school movement is somewhat controversial. Critics - led by teachers' unions - contend they divert much-needed funds from traditional public schools. Still, they have proved quite popular and now educate more than 2 million children in the United States.

Charter schools are publicly funded but privately run, sometimes by for-profit companies. They receive taxpayer dollars to educate each child who enrolls. Yet in most states, they get little or no public money to build classrooms, libraries and other facilities.

Well-established and successful chains of charter schools, such as KIPP, Green Dot or Achievement First, receive hefty support from philanthropic foundations and private donors. The chains can also tap into financing provided by an array of for-profit and non-profit investment funds created for that purpose.

But the charter school movement also includes hundreds of small, one-of-a-kind schools, often started by parents seeking a different educational environment for their children. Those mom-and-pop startups have always had a hard time securing funding to build their schools. Many have had to make do with makeshift classrooms in strip malls or church basements.

And lately, experts say, the credit crunch has worsened.

"It's a hard go," said Eric Hall, an attorney in Colorado Springs who advises charter school boards.

Last month, Fitch Ratings warned it was likely to downgrade bonds backed by charter schools because the sector is volatile and the schools are highly leveraged. Such risks mean charter-school debt is typically considered speculative, rather than investment grade, said Eric Kim, a director at Fitch Ratings.

Meanwhile, the IRS has signaled it plans closer scrutiny of charter schools' tax-exempt status if they rely on for-profit management companies to provide their classroom space and run their academic programs, Hall said. He sent his clients a long memo this summer warning that the stepped-up IRS oversight could put some at "significant risk."

If that weren't enough to make investors wary, several well-known charter schools have run into significant legal and fiscal hurdles in recent months.

Missouri regulators shut down six campuses run by Imagine Schools, one of the nation's largest for-profit charter chains, because of poor academic performance. A judge in California ruled that Aspire Public Schools, a large non-profit chain, hadn't secured the proper approval for six of its schools and would have to get permission from local boards of education to continue running them. Local officials yanked the charter of a high-achieving middle school in Georgia over concerns about mismanagement.

All told, about 15 percent of the 6,700 charter schools that have been launched in the United States in the past two decades have since closed, primarily because of financial troubles, according to the Center for Education Reform, which supports charter schools.

This fall alone, more than 150 established charter schools didn't open their doors to students.

Such volatility "will spook people, no doubt about it," said David Brain, chief executive officer of Entertainment Properties Trust, which has historically owned movie theaters but branched out to invest in charter schools, including the six that were shuttered in St. Louis.

Brain said the closures did not affect his company's bottom line and he remains convinced charter schools are a profitable sector. But even he's not ready to start backing untested startup schools.

Charter school administrators say they know that wariness all too well.

"Until you get that charter renewal that says you're doing good things" - typically after five years in operation - "banks won't even talk to you," said Hank Stopinski, principal of the Health Sciences Charter School in Buffalo. Without foreign investment, he said, "we would not have been able to do this project."

Recession-proof
The EB-5 program has drawn sharp criticism in the past. Some immigrant investors have lost both their money and their shot at U.S. citizenship when their American partners proved inept or corrupt. In the United States, critics have questioned the value of trading visas for scattershot investment.

Yet interest is surging. In the first nine months of this year, the government approved 3,000 petitions from foreigners seeking to participate in the program - nearly twice as many as were approved all last year, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Charter schools have become particularly trendy because they are pitched as recession-proof.

An investor forum in China last spring, for instance, touted U.S. charter schools as a nearly fool-proof investment because they can count on a steady stream of government funding to stay afloat, according to a transcript posted on a Chinese website.

Arizona educator Holly Johnson, who runs three charter schools and plans to open a fourth next year, said she couldn't believe how easy it was to secure $4.5 million in funding from abroad.

"We didn't have to do anything at all," she said, other than open her schools to potential investors. They didn't ask many questions, she said. Their concern was more basic: "They wanted to come over and make sure it was real."

Inner satisfaction
Eager to join the rush, Ali Faisal devoted a day this week to touring charter schools in Arizona.

Faisal, 37, is a Pakistani citizen who now lives in Calgary, Canada. He runs a technology consulting business that works with oil and gas companies and says he is eager to expand to the United States. He figures the best way to do that is to get a green card.

And the best way to do that, he said, is the EB-5 program.

Participants can get a temporary visa by investing $500,000 to $1 million in a federally approved business. If the business creates or preserves at least 10 jobs in two years, the investor and his immediate family are eligible for permanent residency in the United States.

"It's a much easier path," Faisal said.

He decided to put his money in a charter school, he said, because that way he felt he'd be serving society as well as helping himself. The schools he saw impressed him with their rigorous science curriculum and he said he hoped his investment would help nurture a new generation of American entrepreneurs.

"Investing in some type of hotel," Faisal said, "will not give me that inner satisfaction."

Why Poetry Should be Metered | Literary & Visual Arts | Arts ...

By Evan Mantyk
Epoch Times Contributor
Created: October 12, 2012 Last Updated: October 12, 2012

Poetry should be metered, because metered poetry is, quite simply, better than free verse.? This is for the same reason that realist art trumps impressionist art and that Baroque music trumps rock and roll and hip-hop. It is because art, in its best state, is not about the experience of the individual it is about the shared experience of all humanity.

\>");

When you read a poem that is understandable and follows the most basic conventions that are accepted in the English-speaking world then it can be widely experienced and appreciated, whether by a young woman in Iowa or an old man in New Delhi.

The same goes for realist art and Baroque music. You may not like the poem, artwork, or music and may not find it particularly stimulating, but at the very least you can generally understand what it is, what some of its goals are, how it defines goodness, and how it strives toward that goodness. It is fairly easy to tell whether it has been executed decently or not.

In the case of a poem, if it maintains a balanced meter and if it relies on the standard conventions of poetry, such rhyme, alliteration, metaphor, simile, and others, then it is clear what it values as good. Now, whether such a conventional poem is actually good or not will depend on the contemporary message being conveyed and whether or not it is clear, engaging, and worthwhile. The prerequisite first, though, is that the poem meet the basic standards for being good. Your poem may have a message that is clear, engaging, and worthwhile, but the amount of people it would have the potential to reach would be severely fragmented and diminished.

The poetry, art, and music proliferated today moves further and further toward fragmentation in perspective. If you do not explain to a person why a modern poem, painting, or song is supposedly good, there is a strong chance they will have no idea that it is good at all.

This is not merely a philosophical discussion. The shared experience of humanity, either ignored by most modern poetry, music, and art or embraced by most classical poetry, music, and art, is something with real scientific implications. The most obvious being the Mozart effect, whereby by plants and children have been scientifically shown to benefit from listening to music by 18th century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Yet, the Mozart effect is really just the tip of the iceberg. British scientist Rupert Sheldrake calls this connection between our fellow men morphic resonance and posits that each person and animal has a morphogenetic field. The morphic resonance and morphogenetic fields operate across time and space with the connection being stronger between organisms and things that are similar.

Sheldrake discusses these concepts in the context of the human genetic code. Modern science poured billions of dollars into the Human Genome Project with the theory being that we could find bad genes that cause diseases passed on supposedly in your genes from your parents and could find genes that explain your physical and potentially mentally characteristics similarly passed on. Indeed, people today say something is ?in his genes? or say someone has ?bad genes? or ?good genes.?

Sheldrake posits that the whole approach is wrong. Modern science?s obsession with a human body and genes is like someone who has never seen a TV before taking it apart and wondering how the components create the images on the screen. It is the intangible signal coming in that creates the images. Similarly, it is the intangible morphogenetic fields and morphic resonance that determine what will happen. If you?re field is very similar to your father?s field and he had heart disease then it may be similarly warped in such a way as to create heart disease in you.

Sheldrake?s theory goes a long way in explaining inexplicable but observable phenomena in human and animal life. The implication for poetry and the arts is also profound. Regardless of what spiritual persuasion, or lack thereof, you may be from, reality as we know it is different from what modern science has told us. The intangible has much more power than we realize.

When poetry, art, or music aligns with the time-tested traditions left by millennia of poets, artists, and musicians and is widely acceptable by people today then it could truly have a positive impact on you and society, physically, mentally, and spiritually.? It positively activates the scientifically and undeniably real connection between all of us. Call it what you want, morphogenetic fields, the shared human experience, or simply good poetry.

Not a Martyr: 25 Stunning & Extraordinary Toddler-Wearing Photos ...

top3 1024x1024 Not a Martyr: Stunning & Extraordinary Toddlerwearing Images From Around The WorldAs we draw to a close on International Babywearing Week, I thought what better way to celebrate than to make a call out to all of our awesome readers and fellow Babble bloggers who are active baby and toddler wearers?

I was going to make this a response?piece?to this silly little article that was written on The Stir, but the more submissions I received and quotes sent in and the conversations I had with the mamas who were sending their pictures in?well, I was?inspired and delighted. The annoyance of that silly little article sort of just melted away. These pictures and these stories, speak for themselves.

I?m pretty sure that our ancestors the world over who wore their children?they didn?t consider themselves martyrs. They were getting shit done and loving their kids. Not much more needs to be said. There?s enough heavy and heated debates going on betwixt mothers.

Let?s end the week by celebrating in all of the vast and incredible ways we choose to mother.

Enjoy and Happy Toddlerwearing!

    Me & The Duchess

We travel A LOT with my partner frequently touring as a musician. There isn't (as in rarely if ever) always room for the stroller on top of the stand-up bass and our luggage and other gear. Aside from all of that? I ENJOY wearing my babies and toddlers. I can't do it all the time, as I have a bad back, but I do it when I can and when I want.

"Oh boy am I thankful for babywearing. I don?t exactly know how parenting two this close in age would be possible otherwise. I am so thankful I live in an age where quality and ergonomic carriers that don?t kill your back like the Ergo exist. I often have older women raise their brows and say to me ?Well. We didn?t have those in when I was having babies? and I normally smile and say something like ?Oh? because I am socially weird. But what I want to do is lean in and say 'HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO IT?!!??!'."

"I love that I am able to wear my toddler. I hear so many people say that they loved wearing their baby, but stopped once baby became mobile and transitioned into toddlerhood. Adele loves to be worn, and at 20 months, I still wear her on a daily basis. Toddlers are busy little people, with an agenda all their own. I love that wearing Adele brings her back to mama for some time to reconnect and continue to strengthen the bond that has been building over the last 20 months. Holly Whitney & Co.

"One of the things I really love about toddlerwearing is our ability to really explore the world together. When my son is wrapped on my front or my back he is up high and can see the world from my point of view. We talk about the things we see, hear, and smell. And we are so close that a snuggle or a kiss or a whisper is always seconds away. Happy Babywearing!"

When Competition Helps and Hurts Motivation | Psychology Today

How many times have you used competition to motivate your staff? Or had your boss use competition to motivate you? Does competition work? Is it really motivating? We take for granted that competition will motivate people to do stuff, and it can, but the research on competition shows that competition is only motivating with certain conditions.

Competition Motivates Men, But Not Women ? Gneezy's research showed that boys and girls and men and women do not respond the same way to competition. Competition often increases performance for boys and men (as long as there aren?t too many competitors ? see below), but it doesn?t always increase performance for girls and women. If women are competing against other women then there might be an improvement in performance, although it?s usually not large. And if women are competing against men then they often show no improvement in performance with a competition.

Fewer Competitors = More Competition ??Did you take a standardized test like the SAT or ACT to get into college? How many people were in the room when you took the test? What does it matter? Research by Stephen Garcia and Avishalom Tor shows that it may matter a lot. Garcia and Tor first compared SAT scores for locations that had many people in the room taking the test versus locations that had smaller numbers. They adjusted the scores to control for the educational budget in that region and other factors. Students who took the SAT test in a room with fewer people scored higher. Garcia and Tor hypothesized that when there are only a few competitors, you (perhaps unconsciously) feel that you can come out on top, and so you try harder. And, the theory goes, when there are more people, it?s harder to assess where you stand and therefore you?re less motivated to try to come out on top. They called this the N effect, with N equaling number as in formulas.

Competing against 10 competitors vs. competing against 100 ??Garcia and Tor decided to test their theory in the lab. They asked students to complete a short quiz, and told them to complete it as quickly and accurately as possible. They were told that the top 20 percent would receive $5. Group A was told that they were competing against 10 other students. Group B was told that they were competing against 100 other students. Participants in Group A completed the quiz significantly faster than those in Group B. The interesting thing is that there was no one actually in the room with them! They were just told that other people were taking the test.

What do you think? Does this research fit with your own experience?

Here's the research:?

Buy Tuxedos and Cashmere Used (Because Newer Is Not Better) [Clothing]

Buy Tuxedos and Cashmere Used (Because Newer Is Not Better)It's smarter to buy your tuxedoes, hats, cashmere sweaters, and certain other upscale clothing items used, whenever possible. Not just because used is cheaper than new, but because, as men's clothing blog Put This On explains, trends in clothing manufacture have left us with used goods that are better than new.

Jesse Thorn writes about seven items that make sense to buy used. Many items are the stuff of weddings, formals, and other events that most of us will only encounter a few times in our lives. That's a good reason alone not to put a hurting on your credit card, but Thorn points out that you'll probably get more use out of used goods:

Formal Wear Unlike most men's styles, formal wear has remained largely static since it was codified at the beginning of the 20th century. That means that if you can find a conservatively-styled tuxedo from almost any era, it will be right at home today. The bonus: it'll probably be better-made than all but the finest new equivalents. With a bit of diligence, you can find a great tuxedo for a hundred dollars or less.

What used finds have improved your own wardrobe? What else would you recommend buying used, beyond the seven items listed at the link?
