Capital News ? African growth no mirage says powerful bank lobby

Posted by AFP on November 7, 2012

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 7 ? Africa?s recent robust growth is sustainable and the continent can attract even more investors if it plays its cards well, an influential group representing the world?s top financial institutions said on Wednesday.

The Institute of International Finance said that the world?s second fastest growing region could maintain 4.7 percent annual growth seen since 2007, according to its maiden report on sub-Saharan Africa.
The powerful institute represents leading banks and financial institutions around the world, notably those who hold large amounts of government bonds.

?After emerging Asia, Africa is the fastest-growing region in today?s world,? said George Abed, head of the IIF?s Africa and Middle East department.

?Many countries on the African continent have achieved great progress in stabilizing their economies and consolidating their rates of growth.

?What is remarkable about this outcome is that it has been achieved during a period of unprecedented global financial turbulence.?

In a report covering seven of the region?s leading economies, the IIF said a potent cocktail of lower debt, better economic management, political stability and an extended resource boom had proven to be an economic elixir for the long crisis-plagued region.

For six of the countries ? Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia ? the report said total external debt declined from 62 percent of GDP in 2003 to 17 percent in 2011.

In South Africa, the picture has been muddier, but Africa?s largest economy continues to receive the bulk of the continent?s inward portfolio investments.

With attractive rates of return compared with those found in industrialised nations, investors have predominantly focused on buying sovereign bonds.

In another sign of the increased appetite for African government debt, Moody?s on Wednesday launched its first sovereign ratings for Nigeria, Kenya and Zambia, which all handily beat troubled Greece in the creditworthiness stakes.

Predicting that African governments would increasingly turn to markets to fund public programmes, Moody?s gave Nigeria the highest rating of the trio, at Ba3, just below investment grade.

?We should keep in mind that Africa?s recent strong performance has been materially aided by massive debt relief and a sustained commodity boom. The future global environment may not be so accommodating?

The ratings judge how likely a country is to default on its debt and go a long way toward determining a government?s cost of borrowing.

?Moody?s believes the continent?s growth will be characterized by increasing utilisation of international capital market finance,? Jacques Els of Moody?s South Africa said.

Such a trend might have been unthinkable just a decade ago, when debt relief and aid for African nations topped the headlines.

But the IIF also warned that African government must keep on their toes.

?We should keep in mind that Africa?s recent strong performance has been materially aided by massive debt relief and a sustained commodity boom. The future global environment may not be so accommodating,? said Abed.

Continued political stability will also be key, he argued.

Children Welcome Newborn Baby J to the Family- Charlotte ...

When I spoke with this mama about photographing her soon-to-be newborn baby, she didn?t know whether she was having a boy or a girl. She told me that she was looking for a photographer to do some more lifestyle type of shots of her two older children welcoming the newest baby into the family. ?When working with families, I love to focus on the relationships between kids and parents and siblings, so I knew this would be a great session.

While spending the afternoon with this family, I got to photograph lots of natural, candid moments between the family members. ?I loved seeing how both older children were so interested in baby J, little M sang to her when she got upset and brother L was so happy and proud to hold her. With a brother and sister like that and a doting mother and father, there is going to be no shortage of love for this baby!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you in your beautiful home, P family! ?Thank you for having me photograph such a special time in your life!

Most Real Estate Investors Aren't Aware Of All Their 'Menu' Options

menu options

Of all the Purposeful Plans I?ve engineered and executed, a significant chunk were with folks who?d come to me with a pretty nice portfolio. They?d done well, many enviably so. Or did they? Remember when we were kids and argued about who made the best ?burger? When you added in homemade, the debates would get intense. Then it happened. You had your first really good steak. It was cooked perfectly. For a month you couldn?t make yourself think of hamburgers, cuz all your mind could picture was another plate-sized steak with your name on it. Right up ?til that day, you didn?t know steaks were even on your menu. I vaguely remember wondering why it took so long for Mom ?n Dad to let me in on the secret. :)

The last 10 years or so I?ve done who knows how many after-the-fact analyses in order to learn what I?d of done differently if they?d called me sooner, rather than later. One of my clients called ?em post transaction?autopsies. The modifications I suggested often would?ve ?produced far better results. In most instances the investor has been easily able to perceive, in hindsight, that the changes woulda been reasonably doable. Sometimes it?s merely utilizing different techniques to get to the same Point B. Much of the time, however, it?s real value is in demonstrating to the investor their options menu had pages of which they were unaware. This opens up a new world to the typical investor, even when they?re very experienced.

BawldGuy Axiom: It?s not the answers to the questions we have that hinder us from ultimate real estate investment success. It?s almost always the answers to the questions we never knew to ask.

If you?re unaware of the existence of three different investment strategies, their benefits aren?t available to ya. Duh. That?s not the whole story though, not by a long shot. It?s one thing to learn three previously unknown strategies. It?s quite another to discover their power when combined synergistically. At the restaurant how would you feel if you?d been ordering from the same list of various ?burgers for years, only to learn there were two other rooms where folks were ordering from a far more robust ? and productive ? menu?

Long term real estate investors have pages on their currently available menus they?ve never seen, cuz they?ve never been told they exist. We can?t execute a strategy(s) about which we know nothing. I know, Captain Obvious rides again. But on a serious note, this is how do-it-yourselfers apparently do so amazingly well, then arrive at retirement having followed a Plan that generated less than half the income reasonably possible. What makes it even more galling to some is that many of the strategies were known to them. They just didn?t have the expertise or experience to use them at the proper time, or in concert with appropriate additional strategies. Truth is, most of ?em never find out what could have been.

The real life difference.

I can tell you now, and with complete confidence that there are investors out there, maybe you included, who possess twice the capital/equity as the other guy, but to no avail. Due to the other guy?s thicker menu ? and his ability to ?order? from it ? he?ll hit retirement with as much income as you, very possibly more. A LOT more. The investor with the biggest menu and most options wins. It?s as simple as that. Outside of blind luck, which most of us have seen or experienced, the menu/options factor is the key to predicting your ultimate retirement income ? or lack thereof, as Grandma used to say.

The difference can literally be six figures annually. Most investors simply don?t know what?s on their menu cuz they?ve never been able to see all the missing pages. Ordering that juicy, perfectly prepared filet mignon off your two page menu is literally impossible if it?s located on page three. How many years are ya gonna be building what will end up being a hamburger retirement, when steak had been on your menu from Day 1? Don?t build your retirement based on an incomplete menu. ?Burgers are a nice change of pace, but I wouldn?t want a steady diet of ?em at retirement.

The power contained in the capacity to utilize all the options on all the pages on your own menu is there for you to harness.

Just Post That Query And Learn Online - Work On the Internet

Have you been struggling with that particular lesson or subject, or having difficulty in grasping that specific mathematical concept? Are you a part time worker who is attending evening schools, and doesn???t have time to spare for extra tuitions outside? Are tutoring facilities too far away and inccessible for you to travel to regularly from your home? Then help is available, at your home and at the tip of your fingers. Just go online on your personal computer and search for Homework help online or online tutoring services and you will be lost for choice at the numerous choices available, for websites on personal online tutoring services and Answers for homework and project support.

Tiger mosquito, vector of chikungunya virus and dengue fever, is more flighty than first thought

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? Female tiger mosquitoes, vectors of the chikungunya virus and of dengue fever, had been thought to mate only once during their short few weeks of life. They are apparently much less faithful than imagined, however. A team representing the IRD and its partners(1) has discovered that they may in fact mate with several males during their short lives. What is more, the same clutch of eggs can be engendered by different fathers! For their part, the males can mate with over 10 different females.

These recent studies, conducted on the island of Reunion and published notably in the journal PLOS ONE, will make it possible to perfect the "sterile insect technique." This innovative approach to fighting against vectors of disease consists of fooling females into mating with infertile males so as to reduce the population of mosquitoes in the wild. Researchers will, in particular, be able to establish what quantity of sterilised males to release in order to compensate for the infidelities of the females.

Dengue fever and the chikungunya virus continue to take their toll all over the world. In the absence of either a vaccine or effective treatment, attacking the vector remains the sole course of action. If this new method proves promising, it will offer an ecologically acceptable alternative to the use of insecticides.

Female tiger mosquitoes, the vectors of the chikungunya virus, are much less faithful than entomologists had previously thought. A team of researchers from IRD and its partners(1) recently discovered that the ladies of the Aedes albopictus species, to give them their scientific name, mate several times during their short lives. Until now specialists had thought that they copulated with a single male during their few short weeks of existence. According to this generally accepted hypothesis, once they had been impregnated they developed an aversion to any further insemination. The discovery of an unexpected sexual appetite on their part has major implications for the newly-developed "sterile insect technique."

Objective: to fool the females

IRD researchers on the island of Reunion have been working on this antivector strategy for several years. Based on the sterilisation of male mosquitoes, it is intended to reduce the population of vectors found in natural conditions. The method consists of releasing sterilised, and therefore infertile males in order to 'deceive' the females, who had been thought to mate only once, into doing so with these infertile individuals. As shown in previous studies, male mosquitoes sterilised by radiation(2) in the laboratory nevertheless succeeded in mating normally with the females. The latter continue to produce a large number of eggs, but they are non-fertilised and will thus produce no offspring.

One mother, several fathers

To optimise this new antivector technique, a good understanding of biology, ecology and the behaviour and competitiveness of mosquitoes is essential. The researchers thus attempted to determine whether the eggs of the female tiger mosquitoes captured in Reunion actually came from a single male or had involved several male progenitors. Thanks to genetic markers, they were able to demonstrate that the same clutch of eggs could be the result of mating with several different males. The new study, published in PLOS ONE, thus reveals that the females are in reality likely to have recourse to multiple inseminations. This result suggests that the repulsion felt by females of the species for any new union after mating a first time is not systematic.

Highly active males

During a previous study, the research team had also shown that male tiger mosquitoes are very efficient. They remain sexually active for over 14 days. Moreover, scientists have underlined the high number of females impregnated by a single male: the tiger mosquito is capable of mating with over ten females on average during this period. Where does this great reproductive success come from? This fundamental question remains unanswered. Sterilised male mosquitoes do, however, seem a little less competitive.

These results will enable researchers to maximise the effectiveness of the sterile male technique, and in particular to specify how many infertile males should be released in order to increase the probability that a female will mate with one of them and so as to compensate for their slightly lower attractiveness.

Dangerous females

The much-feared tiger mosquito is responsible for the transmission of several diseases throughout the world. It is the main vector of the chikungunya virus and the second of dengue fever -- after another mosquito of the genus Aedes. As in the case of the famous members of the anopheles genus that carry malaria, it is the females that transmit the viruses to men and to animals. They in fact bite the latter in order to feed on their blood and thus ensure the development of their eggs.

Rarely fatal, the chikungunya virus is nevertheless considered a major public health problem in Asia, South America and Africa. In 2006 on the island of Reunion, the infection affected almost a third of the population, equivalent to hundreds of thousands of people in total throughout the Indian Ocean. The most frequent symptoms are fevers, joint pains and headaches. No vaccine or treatment has been developed to date. The only available means of action thus continues to be the antivector strategy.

In light of this, the sterilisation of male mosquitoes could offer an alternative that is more respectful of the environment and of ecosystems than the use of insecticide sprays. If at the end of the laboratory research phase this approach is indeed judged promising, researchers may proceed in the next few years with experimental releases in the field. A significant effort is needed beforehand in order to increase awareness, however, to ensure that the new method is well accepted and supported by the local population.

(1) These studies were conducted in partnership with the Centre for the Study and Monitoring of Emerging Diseases in the Indian Ocean (CRVOI) in Reunion, the Indian Ocean Regional Health Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Austria.

(2) Sterilisation by radiation consists of exposing a body very briefly to a source of radioactive emissions. This procedure is currently used on food and sanitary products, etc.

WEALTH IN LIFE; GIVE | Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance

CHARITY AND WEALTH BUILDING

Barbara Walters just pledged $250,000 for Hurricane Sandy disaster relief, George Stephanopolis promised $50,000. These public contributions are inspiring and motivating. And it?s great to give during times of disaster. I will contribute today to the red cross as well. But, don?t forget about others during the rest of the year.

abc day of giving red cross

BUILD WEALTH THROUGH GIVING

Don?t let disasters be the only time you give.

Get Inspired by Hurricane Sandy to Give

I hesitate to write about charity at the risk of sounding ?preachy.? Which is kind of silly, since this entire website is devoted to motivating others to improve their lives through financial and personal wealth building.

CHARITY CONTRIBUTES TO WEALTH

I don?t know if giving leads to financial wealth or not. Although some folks say they?ve experienced abundance and a wealthy life when giving to others. I know the personal rewards of sharing one?s good fortune with others. Life is more than dollars and cents. In fact, consider your most wonderful memories and attach a dollar value to them; the birth of a child, the relationship with your spouse, the fun of playing with a dog, a walk through the snow, or an evening of trick or treating. Every one of those events is free!!!

A natural disasters can focus your priorities on what is important. Now is a good time to evaluate.

Financial wealth building is important, but so is giving to others, family relationships, and friends.

Give to others for your own benefit and the benefit of the global community. I recommend Charity Navigator to help wade through the mass of pleas for assistance. I automate my giving through their site as well.

What are your personal beliefs towards giving and charity? Does a natural disaster move you to action?
