Syria and Iran condemn U.S. plan to aid anti-Assad rebels

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria and Iran on Saturday condemned a move by the United States to give non-lethal aid to rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accusing Washington of double standards.

"I do not understand how the United States can give support to groups that kill the Syrian people," Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said at a news conference in Tehran with Ali Akbar Salehi, Iran's foreign minister.

"This is nothing but a double-standard policy ... One who seeks a political solution does not punish the Syrian people."

The United States said on Thursday it would for the first time give non-lethal aid to Syrian rebels, describing the aid as a way to bolster the rebels' popular support.

The assistance will include medical supplies, food for rebel fighters and $60 million to help the civil opposition provide basic services like security, education and sanitation.

Iran's Salehi said the U.S. move would prolong the Syrian conflict, an uprising-turned-civil war in which 70,000 people have been killed.

"If you really feel sorry about the ongoing situation in Syria you should force the opposition to sit at the negotiation table with the Syrian government and put an end to bloodshed," he said.

"Why do you encourage the opposition to continue these acts of violence?"

Iran and Russia support Assad, while the United States and its allies generally back the opposition.

Shark fisheries globally unsustainable: 100 million sharks die every year

Mar. 1, 2013 ? The world's shark populations are experiencing significant declines with perhaps 100 million -- or more -- sharks being lost every year, according to a study published this week in Marine Policy.

"Sharks have persisted for at least 400 million years and are one of the oldest vertebrate groups on the planet. However, these predators are experiencing population declines significant enough to cause global concern," explains lead author Boris Worm, professor of biology at Dalhousie.

In the recently published paper, "Global Catches, Exploitation Rates and Rebuilding Options for Sharks," Worm and three other researchers from Dalhousie University teamed up with scientists from the University of Windsor in Canada, as well as Stony Brook University in New York, Florida International University (FIU) in Miami and the University of Miami, to calculate total shark mortality and outline possible solutions to protect the world's shark populations.

"This is a big concern because the loss of sharks can affect the wider ecosystem," said Mike Heithaus, executive director of FIU's School of Environment, Arts and Society and co-author of the paper. "In working with tiger sharks, we've seen that if we don't have enough of these predators around, it causes cascading changes in the ecosystem, that trickle all the way down to marine plants." Such changes can harm other species, and may negatively affect commercial fisheries, Heithaus explains.

Based on data collected for the latest study, shark deaths were estimated at 100 million in 2000 and 97 million in 2010. The total possible range of mortality is between 63 and 273 million annually.

The biggest culprit in the significant population decline is a combination of a global boom in shark fishing -- usually for their valuable fins -- and the relatively slow growth and reproductive rates of sharks. Because adequate data of shark catches is lacking for most of the world, the wide range of possible mortality is based on available data of shark deaths and calculated projections for unreported, discarded and illegal catches. But even with the uncertainty there is little question that sharks are being caught faster than they can reproduce.

"Sharks are similar to whales, and humans, in that they mature late in life and have few offspring' said Boris Worm. "As such, they cannot sustain much additional mortality. Our analysis shows that about one in 15 sharks gets killed by fisheries every year. With an increasing demand for their fins, sharks are more vulnerable today than ever before."

While some sharks are receiving protection through national and international agreements, the team of researchers suggests legislation should be expanded to a greater number of species. Imposing a tax on the export and import of shark fins could also help curb demand and generate income for domestic shark fisheries management, according to the study.

"The findings are alarming, but there is hope. Existing regulations are a great start but we must ensure they are adequately enforced," said Samuel Gruber of the University of Miami. "In addition, more nations must invest in sustainable shark fisheries management. This means introducing catch limits, trade regulation and other protective measures for the most vulnerable species and those that move across international boundaries."

The key message in this research is sustainability. Because of the role sharks play in the sustainability of marine ecosystems, the researchers insist that protective measures must be scaled up significantly to avoid further depletion and possible extinction of some of the world's top predators.

The information from this report comes at a critical time, as 177 governments from around the world will attend the March 3-14 meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Bangkok. CITES is widely considered one of the best tools for protecting vulnerable species from extinction. Hammerheads, Oceanic whitetip, and porbeagle sharks are currently being considered for protection under CITES.

Daniel Silver, director of development at ESPN Films, gave the keynote address at SVG?s first-annual postproduction event.

In sports production, where nearly all the focus is reserved for the live event, postproduction ? be it in the form of original series, shoulder programming, or graphics ? can play a prominent role in building drama.

?For us, the ones working on producing content which does not unfold live, our job is to find ways to capture and transfer all of that excitement and emotion from the field and bring it back to the screen,? said Silver, who scouts and develops new projects for ESPN Films.

Over the past decade, ESPN Films was the toast of the sports-production community thanks to its Peabody Award-winning documentary series 30 for 30. The concept behind the project was to pair with a feature filmmaker on each doc, taking a special interest in stories that were close to the filmmaker?s heart and told a unique story that resonated at the time but were eventually forgotten.

?I know there are many other ways to tell sports stories,? said Silver, ?but I have found that the component that separates the truly great sports films ? short form or feature ? from the rest, and the element I believe should be considered just as much as story and execution, is passion, how a piece taps into that unique allegiance we as fans have for our teams and that personal prism in which we view the experience. It?s the juice that makes the squeeze of countless creative meetings and discussions and analyses worth it.?

Silver emphasized the uniqueness that each 30 for 30 documentary has. There is no set look, style, or design to an ESPN Film. They are filmmaker-driven projects that, he noted, can work only if the filmmaker?s vision is fulfilled.

?We have very specific points of view on the kinds of projects we believe should be ESPN Films,? he said. ?It needs to be a story that collectively excites us first. If the filmmaker is truly passionate, we look to see if that passion is being focused in the right way ? meaning, is the director using his or her passion in their filmmaking? That?s when something truly distinctive is produced.?

Throughout the afternoon, SportsPost:NY took an in-depth look at various postproduction topics from the creative (storytelling, show opens, and graphics) to the technical (editing and remote asset management, the cloud, and future technologies).

Silver led attendees into the discussions with one final, overarching thought.

The contest apparently also seeks prosperous individuals willing to pay $1,500 for the prize, plus travel expense to pick it up. There might be good fiscal reasons for Google's parsimony, but I can't help noting that the $12 million of revenue generated by eager beta testers represents five-thousandths of 1 percent of the company's market cap, or one-tenth of a percent of its liquid cash.

Putting aside whatever demographic-shaping is in play, the more interesting question is whether Google will find its desired 8,000 bold creative types. Himes gets DCCC finance post - CT Politics - Connecticut News

A senior staffer for Rep Jim Himes, D-CT4, confirmed late Wednesday that Himes will serve as finance chair for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the current election cycle.

The DCCC will make the announcement Thursday morning.

?As the Republican majority once again holds jobs, recovery, and the middle class hostage to extreme ideology, it is more important than ever that we fill the House with representatives who will eat, sleep, and breathe opportunity for their fellow?Americans,? Himes said Wednesday night. ?I?m thrilled to devote myself to that effort.?

The move confirms earlier media reports that Himes had interest in taking a?DCCC leadership role.

Himes, currently in his third term, is well-positioned, given his financial-services connections, to be a significant fundraiser for Democrats.

The DCCC could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.
