The city of Santa Clara is being asked to agree to a list of "financial demands" by the National Football League in its bid to host the Super Bowl in the San Francisco 49ers new stadium in 2016 or 2017.
The requests include rental of the Santa Clara stadium and other spots nearby for "a much lower rate than normal," and tax breaks, City Attorney Ren Nosky told the San Jose Mercury News.
The financial demands have the city of Santa Clara questioning whether it can make any money off the big game, according to the report. Nosky told the Mercury News that the city is looking at other suburbs that have hosted the Super Bowl in the past.
The "exact terms of the deal are still being discussed in closed session" starting Tuesday and will likely be settled by the end of January, according to the Mercury News.
Those demands are also being asked of the other finalists, Miami and Houston, according to the report, before bids are submitted in May. The location for the two games should be announced after a May 21 NFL owners meeting, according to the report.
