Mayor of Wrexham backs beef on school dinner menu

BEEF dishes served in schools across Wrexham are horse meat-free, testing has revealed.

The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Ian Roberts, broke the good news at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd yesterday, where he was invited to sample school dinners.

The Leader revealed last month that 2oz beefburgers had been taken off the menu as a precaution after a recommendation by the Food Standards Agency to their supplier.

No horse DNA had been found in tested beefburgers, but traces had been found on the property of the suppliers of meat to the beefburger production company.

A spokesman for Wrexham Council said: ?The mayor was delighted to announce that all beef served in Wrexham schools has been certified as 100 per cent beef.

?We had it certified following testing of samples from our suppliers. Testing is done routinely but additional testing has taken place following the horse meat issues.?

Cllr Roberts, who tucked into a minced beef pie for his lunch, was also at school to congratulate chef Jack Thomas, 24, who was highly commended by judges of the School Chef of the Year competition at Deeside College by the Local Authority Catering Association.

He said: ?Jack?s achievements and the excellent management by the school meals service have certainly put school meals back on the menu for many in Wrexham and made sure our children have nutritionally well-balanced meals at lunchtime.

?Well done everyone and good luck next time.?
